A talk on edible forest gardening, permaculture & sustainable living systems for the urban environment.
Tuesday 26th March, 7pm
Paddy O’ Kearney is director of City Composting Ltd, an urban garden situated on the roof of The Chocolate Factory in Dublin’s city center. Paddy will speak to us about creative ways to use space in urban environments, and give us tips on how best to utilise and re-use the materials we have to hand to make beautiful, ecological and edible gardens.
A note from Paddy:
City Composting was conceived in light of recent legislation being brought in by the EU and a want to take responsible action to help alleviate both the waste generated by our city and our carbon footprint.
The use of cargo bikes to collect waste and composting in the city is, in essence, key to the project.
We are currently up-cycling The Chocolate Factory roof to showcase the ethos, resource management and food production in collaboration with Urban Farm.
Through the use of various composting and growing techniques, in particular vertical gardening, we are building a working model which will hopefully be used as a template across the city.

A bit about Mindy O’ Brien:
Mindy O’Brien from VOICE will speak about its campaign to reduce food waste. Ireland wastes nearly 1 million tonnes of food annually and VOICE, with its partners Bia Foodbank and Food Glorious Food, have identified several ways Ireland can reduce its “Food Print”. Food waste has a major impact on the environment through lost energy, CO2 and Methane emissions and water consumption, with tonnes of good edible food discarded by food shops, supermarkets and catering establishments, as well as households, daily. Internationally, there are 1 billion people starving and over 1 billion tonnes of food wasted annually. VOICE is looking to link both the environmental objective of reducing methane-releasing food waste from landfills and the humanitarian objective of feeding the hungry.
Mindy is an environmental attorney educated in the US and has worked in several congressional offices in the US House of Representatives on environmental issues, particularly on water and waste. She has served on the Board of VOICE for over 10 years and has taken up the Coordinator’s position last year. She is also on the Board of Bia Foodbank.
VOICE (Voice of Irish Concern for the Environment) is member-based environmental charity in existence since 1997. Over the years, we have focused our work on Waste, Water, Fluoride and Forestry. We have been educating individuals and governments on the environmental implications associated with food production, manufacturing, transportation, packaging and disposal over the past few years. Leading on from this, we have turned our attention to the issue of food waste, both on an individual and commercial level. We have just successfully organised the Feeding the 5,000 Dublin public awareness event in November 2012.
