We welcome this stunning exhibition to Cornucopia!

Here is some information about the vibrant presence of these beautiful silk hangings from Tibet. Thank you Patricia from www.peacetibetanart.com for the chance to share this work with our customers! Enjoy.

Original Tibetan Buddhist Thankas & Mandalas

Thankas or Thangkas are religious scroll paintings based on Tibetan and Buddhist text. The imagery is renowned feature of such paintings. These artistic paintings with outstanding quality are created with great concentration by highly skilled hands. Thanka painting is a uniquely Tibetan tradition that evolved between the 7th and 12th centuries. Its origins lay in Indian religious art, but Nepalese. Painted on canvas and traditionally mounted in silk brocade, a thanka is more than just a work of art. It is an object of devotion, an aid to spiritual practice, and a bringer of blessings.

Thankas come in a huge variety of styles, depicting various subjects. A thanka may portray the Buddha or some other deity, or a concept in Tibetan cosmology, astrology or medicine. The iconography of the thanka is rich in information about the spiritual practice of Buddhists and the Tibetan worldview. A thanka can bring blessings on the household and serves as a constant reminder of the Buddha’s teachings of compassion, kindness and wisdom. Thankas of particular deities may be used for protection or to overcome difficulties such as sickness.

A wide variety of smaller Thankas are also available for sale –

Our showroom is located in South William Street by appointment only to arrange a viewing contact: Patricia Lohan
